Virginia Copperleaf
Acalypha virginica
native
Other Name:
Virginia Mercury, Virginia Three-seeded Mercury
Virginia Copperleaf is a native plant found through much of Virginia. The alternate name of Virginia Three-seeded Mercury is related to the Roman god rather than the chemical element. A bract is a specialized leaf on a plant connected to the reproductive structure, as opposed to the foliage leaves. The Three-seeded Mercury has small bracts that resemble the god Mercury's winged feet.
