American Strawberry Bush

Euonymus americanus

native

Other Names:
Strawberry Bush, Bursting Heart, Hearts-a-burstin'

American Strawberry Bush is a native deciduous shrub that grows through much of Virginia. While many people like to eat strawberries, the fruit from this plant and many others in the genus Euonymus are considered to be poison to humans. The berries have a strong laxative effect and can cause severe diarrhea. The bright red fruits are encased in red capsules, and their emergence is the basis for another one of the plant's common names: Hearts-a-Burstin'.
